It’s important to look after your physical health, in addition to your emotional well-being. Exercise has many health benefits; improving your mood, strength, balance and sleep quality. Energy levels can increase and your risk of chronic disease is reduced. Benefits of exercise are not limited to your physical health. Social interactions and a change of scenery can help caregivers who may feel more isolated in their caregiving role. Falls prevention classes aim to improve strength and balance to prevent injury and falls.

A Caregiver's Perspective

When caring for my uncle, many people would remind me to take care of my emotional needs, but often times my physical health was put on the backburner. I noticed I was gaining weight, feeling tired and lonely. A friend suggested I try out a weekly exercise program which has increased my confidence, allowed me to socialize with other caregivers and spend some time improving my physical health. Even taking a short walk in the evening has improved my mood!
