Caregivers often find themselves in a steep learning curve of managing someone else’s legal and financial obligations, or changes to their own. It’s important to seek guidance to navigate these topics, as they are often steps that need to be taken to help in these complicated situations.

A Caregiver's Perspective

When my dad passed away my mom was able to manage her finances and legal concerns well. Lately she has become very forgetful and many of the responsibilities have fallen to me. I am happy to support my mom this way, but didn’t know where to start. When I began helping my mom more often, I didn’t have the legal right to access her information. These resources helped me learn my rights, my mom’s rights and how to set up my mom’s affairs so that she can maintain independence, while also receiving the needed support from me.

Tips for Caregivers by Caregivers

• As a caregiver, there may be times when you need to seek out legal or financial advice. You can speak with your financial institution, your accountant/financial planner, or your lawyer to assist you with some of the questions you may have now, and as you plan for the future. Ensure these advisors are experienced; ask for references.

• The future may be difficult to think about - but when you plan and discuss, it will put minds at ease.

• There are many tax exemptions – consider hiring a professional who is knowledgeable about these exemptions to prepare your tax return.

• Keep all parking receipts and document appointment times.

• It is difficult, but best, to begin planning early for the transition to long-term care when your loved one can take part in conversation and include their preferences.

• If your spouse is entering long-term care, ask about completing an Involuntary Separation Statement.

• Do you know your care recipient’s end of life wishes? Advanced planning conversations are difficult, but can prepare everyone for future decisions that will need to be made.
